Folding carton board grades: SBS, CUK, kraft and recycled

5 minute readUpdated November 2026

Two cartons can look identical in a photo and feel completely different in your hand. The difference is the board.

SBS (solid bleached sulphate)

Bright white all the way through, smooth and strong. SBS gives the cleanest colour and crispest finishes, which is why cosmetics, health and premium food brands use it.

CUK and kraft board

Coated unbleached kraft has a natural brown back and is often coated on the printing side. It is very strong and has an earthy look. Uncoated kraft gives that rustic, natural feel loved by coffee and craft brands.

CRB (coated recycled board)

Made from recycled fibre with a white coated top and a grey back. It is the most economical choice and perfectly good for many retail cartons, especially where the inside is not seen.

Thickness in points

Board thickness is measured in points (thousandths of an inch). As a rough guide, 14 to 16 pt suits light products like tea and small cosmetics, 18 to 20 pt is the common retail standard, and 22 to 24 pt adds stiffness for heavier or premium products.

Finishes change the feel

Aqueous coating protects the print cheaply. Matte or gloss lamination adds durability. Soft touch gives a velvety feel. Foil, embossing and spot gloss add highlights. We will tell you which ones earn their keep on your product.
